Rising Hope is facing a crisis during this COVID 19 Pandemic.
- Food donations are way down
- Expenses are up
- MOST IMPORTANT: WE NEED VOLUNTEERSOur food pantry has gone from 30 regular volunteers to 6. Most our volunteers are in the elderly and vulnerable category so their absence is understandable. Still we feed nearly 300 families a week. This is getting to the point it many be impossible to continue. These families depend upon our supplement and will go hungry if we cannot provide.Volunteers need not come into contact with the public receiving food. We need folk to bag food, pick up food and deliver food to shut-ins. Staff will hand bags of food to those coming to the back door.Food donations are way down. CAFB, Food for Others have all said the run on food at the grocery stores has limited what they receive from retail businesses. Whole Foods has canceled their “Gleaning Program” nation wide. We are receiving less from our contacts as well.The extra cleaning hours required of our custodial staff is just one way our expenses are being driven up. Now, more than ever, Good Shepherd Housing (GSH) is relying on YOUR support to help us provide the most basic of services to our residents.
Many of our clients work hourly jobs or hold other positions that have been negatively impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Our residents and their families are feeling the very real impact of the situation, especially as rent and utilities come due next month.
While we are waiving late fees for rent at this time, we are doing our very best to avoid having our resident families fall behind in their rent payments. Once behind on rent, these families will spiral into a worsening financial situation. They could end up losing housing.
We are keenly aware of the fact that some of our residents who hold positions (at hospitals or grocery stores, for example) are still expected to report for work. Many are parents to younger children and will have to secure childcare services with the closure of Fairfax County schools.
Our case managers and staff remain in close communication with our residents. They are assessing their immediate needs. As the pandemic lengthens, we anticipate a growing need for assistance.
Please consider making a donation towards our Emergency Services and Faithful Landlord programs to assist GSH families in need with rent/utilities, groceries or gift cards. Even the smallest contribution can make a significant difference in the lives of those who are struggling through these uncertain times.

if you receive a stimulus check that you don’t think you’ll need, please consider making this gift to New Hope Housing to help our homeless neighbors. Each check can potentially pay security deposit or a month’s rent to help get people into housing today”Another encouragement we’ve been making – people want to be generous but not sure what the future holds. The expected amount of the check is to be $1,200.00 so one idea is: “Consider setting up a monthly donation of $100/month so that your stimulus check keeps giving all year long.”A one-time infusion of gifts right now will certainly help, but gifts spread out into the future can help us weather this crisis also. So either way someone would choose helps a lot.
Thank you all for your support of New Hope Housing. Volunteers are critical in working to end homelessness in our community. We are grateful to you for your support. There are still ways to volunteer at this time but we wish to keep you updated on changes in policy.
As you know, the COVID-19 situation is extremely fluid and changes on a daily basis. At New Hope Housing, we’ve been monitoring the spread and have been taking precautions. Because of the nature of our work, our shelters and housing programs will remain open so that we can continue to serve all our homeless neighbors.
We still need your support but we request that shelter volunteers refrain from coming in the buildings through the end of March and follow CDC guidance. We are also changing how donations are accepted through the end of March. The following changes have been implemented:
- Upcoming volunteer orientations will be rescheduled (we hope to offer online orientations soon!)
- All tours of our facilities are postponed
- We will be accepting certain donations in bins or on tables located at the front of our shelters. Our current needs are:
- New men’s and women’s underwear (we have lots of socks!)
- Cleaning products (bleach, Lysol, paper towels, etc.)
- New t-shirts (undershirts)
- Entertainment (coloring books, DVDs, games, etc.)
- Food donations can be dropped off in designated coolers at our shelters
- Kennedy Shelter: At the back door
- Bailey’s Shelter and Supportive Housing: At the front door
- Residential Program Center: At the front door
- Mondloch House: On the porch by the front door
Please stay home if you are feeling sick or ill. Your safety and the safety of other volunteers, guests, and staff are our top concern. Following CDC guidance will help all of us.

Coronavirus (COVID – 19) Impact to Services
We are taking extra precautions in consideration of the Coronavirus out of concern for the health and safety of our volunteers, staff, clients — and most importantly the community we serve. Keeping our space healthy and safe for all of our clients, volunteers, and staff is of primary importance to us.
If you are a client who would normally access one of our services but you are feeling sick:
- Food Pantry and Basic Needs Clients: Please ask a friend or family member to come collect your food pantry items for you. They will need to bring your ID verifying that you give them permission to pick up food on your behalf. You can also call us at (703) 768-7106 and our food pantry staff will do their best to accommodate you. We appreciate your patience as we do our best to keep all of our clients, volunteers, and staff healthy!
If you are a volunteer
- Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization. We welcome anyone who is interested in volunteering to help strengthen our community at our various locations. However, if you feel sick or are showing symptoms of the Coronavirus, we ask that you stay home, rest, and send an email to email@example.com expressing your interest. Our staff will coordinate a later service opportunity, as soon as you’ve recovered.
